In a high street landscape where independent retailers often come and go, Sherwood Wholefoods stands as one of Market Drayton’s longest-running success stories. With nearly 40 years of continuous trading behind it, the much-loved store has become a cornerstone of the town’s community—and one of Shropshire’s go-to destinations for wholefoods, organic living and low-waste shopping.

For the past 30 years, the shop has been in the hands of Carol and Miller Reid, whose passion for natural, ethical and sustainable products has shaped the store’s distinct identity. Step inside their shop on historic Cheshire Street and you’re greeted by shelves brimming with natural, organic and ethically sourced groceries: wholefoods, loose herbs and spices, herbal teas, baking essentials and pantry staples. Alongside sits a wide range of eco-friendly household cleaners, organic toiletries and natural skincare.

One of the big draws is the popular refill station – a hub for shoppers looking to reduce packaging and live more sustainably. Here, customers can top up on Ecover and Ecoleaf cleaning products, refill Faith In Nature shampoos, conditioners and body washes, or find refills of organic gourmet ground coffee or coffee beans.

The shop also caters particularly well to those with special dietary needs, offering a good selection of gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan supplies.

Health and wellbeing are another cornerstone of the business. Sherwood Wholefoods boasts an extensive range of natural remedies, from herbal and homeopathic supplements to essential oils, vitamins and minerals. As a trained nutritionist, Carol is often the first port of call for customers seeking advice, whether they’re looking for a specific remedy or guidance on healthy eating.

“The main thing I try to help with is getting people to eat well and healthily,” she explains. “I like to encourage customers to make their own food and not rely on processed foods.”

The shop’s story begins with its founder, Cynthia Sherwood, whose name remains proudly above the door. Carol joined Cynthia when the business first started as a stall in Market Drayton Indoor Market. As the venture grew, Cynthia moved into a high street shop – right next door to the store’s current premises – and Carol went with her. When Cynthia retired, she sold the business. Carol continued working for the new owner and, after a brief period, had the opportunity to buy the business herself, back in 1995. Miller soon joined her and the pair have run the shop side-by-side as business partners ever since.

Sherwood Wholefoods feels like a little calming oasis of wellbeing as you step through the door. There’s a steady stream of customers and Carol, in particular, is frequently consulted for advice on everything from ingredients and nutritional supplements to homeopathic remedies and beauty products.

Look around the shop and its shelves are stacked with ranges of quality herbal teas, dried fruits, grains, pulses, flours, nuts, seeds, cereals to name some of the myriad groceries. You can also find kombucha and sauerkraut, local honey, local eggs and a good selection of chocolate made from pure ingredients.

Open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, Sherwood Wholefoods continues to thrive as a warm, knowledgeable and deeply rooted independent business – one that has helped generations of shoppers make healthier, more sustainable choices.
