What makes a town somewhere people want to visit, return to and recommend to others?
For Market Drayton, I think the answer is quite simple. It’s the welcome.
Our Shropshire market town has plenty to offer, from independent shops and traditional markets to cafés, historic buildings and our famous gingerbread. But what really makes Market Drayton special is the friendly atmosphere that visitors experience when they arrive.
And that welcome extends beyond the people who live here. Whether you’re visiting with your dog, arriving on a coach or simply looking for somewhere different to spend a few hours, Market Drayton is ready to welcome you.
The friendliest place I’ve ever lived
I’ve lived in several places over the years, but I can genuinely say that Market Drayton is the friendliest place I’ve ever lived.
There’s something about the people here that makes the town feel different.
How many places can you walk down the street, say hello to someone you’ve never met and have them smile and say hello back?
It’s something that seems to have been lost in many places, where people hurry past one another without making eye contact, let alone stopping for a conversation.
But in Market Drayton, people still acknowledge one another.
You can find yourself chatting to someone while waiting in a queue, even though you’ve never met them before. Or perhaps you’re sitting in a café or restaurant and spot something delicious being served at the next table. Before you know it, you’re asking what they’ve ordered and whether they’d recommend it.
Rather than being surprised that a stranger has started talking to them, people are usually happy to have a conversation.
It’s such a simple thing, but I think it makes an enormous difference.
Sometimes those conversations last just a couple of minutes. Other times you can end up chatting for ages.
You don’t have to know someone to have a friendly conversation in Market Drayton.
In a world where we’re often rushing around, looking at our phones or keeping ourselves to ourselves, those spontaneous conversations are something worth holding on to.
It’s one of the things I value most about living here, and something I hope visitors notice too.
Look out for our Dog Friendly stickers!
Market Drayton isn’t just welcoming to people. We’re making it easier for visitors to explore the town with their four-legged friends too.
We’ve handed out Dog Friendly stickers to local shops, cafés and other businesses, helping visitors see at a glance where their dogs are welcome.
So, as you’re exploring the town centre, look out for the stickers displayed in windows and entrances.
It’s a simple idea, but it makes a real difference. Rather than wondering whether you can take your dog inside, you can spot businesses that are happy to welcome you both.
With the Shropshire Union Canal, Town Park and surrounding countryside, Market Drayton also offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a walk before exploring the shops or stopping for refreshments.
Individual businesses may have their own arrangements, so it’s always worth checking if you’re unsure.
And anyone who walks a dog will know they’re often the perfect conversation starter!
All aboard! Market Drayton is Coach Friendly
Our welcoming reputation doesn’t stop there.
In May 2026, Market Drayton received official Coach Friendly accreditation from the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK (CPT).
This national recognition acknowledges the arrangements made to welcome coaches and their passengers, including consideration of parking, drop-off facilities, accessibility and visitor information.
For coach operators and group organisers, it makes Market Drayton a destination worth considering for a day trip or as part of a wider tour of Shropshire.
For passengers, it means an opportunity to discover a traditional market town with plenty to enjoy.
Our Wednesday Street Market, independent shops, cafés and places to eat offer visitors the chance to browse, relax and meet local people.
There’s also our famous Market Drayton gingerbread, local history and heritage, and the opportunity to explore the canal and green spaces.
Every visitor makes a difference to the businesses and traders who help keep our town centre thriving.
