Market Drayton was looking a little brighter after another fantastic turnout for the town’s Community Litter Pick and Sweep-Up on Sunday, with residents, councillors, volunteers and local Scouts all giving their time to help look after the town.
A brilliant 25 volunteers took part, working their way across the town centre, car parks, down towards the swimming baths and through the Town Park.
By the end of the session, the team had collected an impressive 39 bags of rubbish – along with some rather more unusual discoveries, including a bicycle and even a toilet seat!
But the morning was about much more than the number of bags collected.
Young volunteers leading by example
One of the highlights of Sunday’s litter pick was welcoming members of the Scouts, who joined the community effort as part of working towards one of their badges.
It was fantastic to see young people getting stuck in alongside the other volunteers and taking such pride in their town.
Community events like this are a great opportunity for children and young people to see first-hand how even a small amount of their time can make a visible difference to the place where they live.
They certainly set a great example – and hopefully inspired a few more people to join us next time!
25 people – one big difference
The Community Litter Pick and Sweep-Up shows just what can be achieved when people work together.
In only a few hours, volunteers covered a huge area of Market Drayton and removed dozens of bags of litter from streets and public spaces used every day by residents, businesses and visitors.
Mayor of Market Drayton Cllr Tim Manton thanked everyone who took part and described the turnout as “awesome”, praising volunteers for making such a “massive, positive difference to Market Drayton as a whole”.
Town Councillors Gary Groves, Rupert Adcock, Phil Glover and Ian Sharp were among those rolling up their sleeves and getting involved, alongside residents and volunteers of all ages.
Thanks also go to Market Drayton Town Council staff, whose work behind the scenes helps make the community litter picks possible.
Taking pride in Market Drayton
Keeping Market Drayton looking its best is something everyone can play a part in.
The litter picks aren’t just about cleaning up. They bring people together, encourage pride in the town and provide an opportunity to meet others while doing something genuinely useful for the community.
And you certainly don’t need to be a councillor, belong to a group or have taken part before.
Everyone is welcome.
