Around 60 volunteers from across Market Drayton came together for a special afternoon tea to celebrate and thank the people who give so much of their time to help others and support the local community.
The event, funded by Market Drayton Town Council as part of the Make it Market Drayton campaign, was held to recognise the invaluable contribution volunteers make to organisations, charities and community groups throughout the town.
Guests enjoyed a delicious selection of freshly baked scones, cakes, tea and coffee while spending time with fellow volunteers and sharing stories about the work they do within the community.
A team of 15 students from Grove School played an important role in making the afternoon a success. The students helped set up the venue before warmly welcoming guests as they arrived. Throughout the afternoon they ensured cups remained topped up, served refreshments and chatted with attendees until it was time for them to leave to catch their buses home.
Volunteers attending represented a wide range of organisations and groups, including Mencap, Festival Drayton Centre, Community Cars, the Scouts and many others who work tirelessly to support local people throughout the year.
Helen McCabe, who runs the Make it Market Drayton campaign, welcomed everyone to the event and thanked them for the difference they make to life in the town.
She said: “It is wonderful to bring together so many people who quietly give their time, skills and energy to help others. Volunteers make such a huge difference to our community and this afternoon tea was our way of saying thank you for everything they do.“
The Mayor of Market Drayton, Cllr Tim Manton, also addressed guests and spoke about the importance of volunteering.
He said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our town. Whether they are supporting community groups, helping at events, driving people to appointments, mentoring young people or raising money for good causes, they make Market Drayton a stronger, kinder and more connected place. On behalf of the Town Council and the people of Market Drayton, I would like to thank every volunteer for their dedication and commitment.”
During the afternoon, many charities and community organisations highlighted the growing need for more volunteers. Across the country, many groups are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit new people, despite demand for their services continuing to grow.
To help address this, local residents are being encouraged to attend the Market Drayton Volunteers Fair on 11 September at the Festival Drayton Centre.
The fair, which is also funded by Market Drayton Town Council, will give local charities, community groups and voluntary organisations the opportunity to showcase their work, meet potential volunteers and share the many ways people can get involved.
Free stalls are available for organisations wishing to take part, making it easier for groups to connect with local residents and recruit new volunteers.
Whether someone can spare a few hours each month or is looking for a regular volunteering role, the Volunteers Fair will offer a chance to discover how they can make a positive difference in Market Drayton.
Anyone interested in volunteering, or organisations wishing to book a free stall, are encouraged to get involved and help keep Market Drayton’s strong community spirit thriving.
