Market Drayton has always been a town where people gather. Long before cafés, cinemas or community halls, its pubs were the places where news was shared, deals were struck, music played and journeys paused. Inns and beerhouses once lined the streets, serving everyone from drovers and farmers to travelling merchants, soldiers and stagecoach passengers.
On Saturday 25 April 2026, the Historic Pub Walk invites you to explore that living history – not from behind a display case, but by walking the same streets and stepping into the same buildings that have shaped the town for centuries.
A Town Built on Hospitality
By the late 18th and 19th centuries, Market Drayton was thriving. Its position on key routes through Shropshire made it a natural stopping point, and its pubs reflected that importance. Some were coaching inns, others modest beerhouses, many with their own maltings or small breweries. Together, they formed the social backbone of the town.
Not all of those pubs have survived. Some were lost to fire, redevelopment or changing habits. Others remain – adapted, renamed, rebuilt – but still unmistakably part of Market Drayton’s story.
This walk offers a glimpse into that past, sharing just enough detail to bring each stop to life and leave you wanting to know more.
Starting Where the Story Is Kept
The walk begins at Market Drayton Museum & Resource Centre, the perfect place to set the scene. From devastating fires and rebuilding in the 17th century to the boom years of brewing and trade, the museum helps anchor the stories you’ll encounter along the way.
From there, the walk moves out into the town itself – because Market Drayton’s history isn’t hidden away. It’s written into timber frames, brickwork, street corners and pub signs.
Pubs with Stories to Tell
Each pub on the route has its own place in that history.

The King’s Arms, dating back to the 17th century, reminds us of a time when maltings were as important as taprooms, and pubs were essential links in the local economy.

The Vaults, standing on the site of much older hostelries, hints at Market Drayton’s commercial past, when wine vaults, merchants and licensed houses sat side by side in the town centre.

The Crown, a survivor of the Great Fire of 1651, has long been associated with brewing and travellers, and even carries echoes of the Civil War period, when officers sought food, ale and shelter in towns like Drayton.

The Red Lion, once part of a much wider brewing story that stretched from Shropshire to Staffordshire and beyond, brings the walk firmly into the present day, showing how Market Drayton’s brewing heritage continues to evolve.
