Across Market Drayton, volunteers are making a difference every day. From supporting community groups and local events to caring for green spaces and helping residents stay connected, their contribution is invaluable.

This week (1st-7th June) is Volunteers Week 2026, a national campaign celebrating the millions of people across the UK who give their time, skills and energy to support others.

The Volunteers Behind Market Drayton

Volunteers play a vital role in helping Market Drayton remain a welcoming, vibrant and connected town. Every week, local people give their time to:

  • Support friendship, learning and wellbeing through groups
  • Help run events, films and activities at the Festival Drayton Centre
  • Assist community centres and village halls across the area
  • Take part in litter-picking and environmental projects
  • Support residents and visitors at the local library
  • Help care for the Shropshire Union Canal and surrounding green spaces
  • Organise community events and activities throughout the year

Without volunteers, many of these services and activities simply would not be possible.

A Week to Say Thank You

Volunteers Week is an opportunity to recognise the dedication, kindness and commitment shown by volunteers across the town.

Nationally, volunteering continues to play a crucial role in strengthening communities. While millions of people volunteer each year, many organisations are still looking for new people to get involved and help support their work.

This week provides a chance not only to thank existing volunteers but also to inspire others to discover the benefits of volunteering.

Volunteers Afternoon Tea

As part of Volunteers Week, Market Drayton Town Council is funding a special Volunteers Afternoon Tea to celebrate the people who make such a positive contribution to community life.

The event will provide an opportunity for volunteers to come together, meet representatives from local organisations, share experiences and learn more about future volunteering opportunities in the town.

Looking Ahead: Market Drayton Volunteers Fair

Support for volunteering in Market Drayton will continue beyond Volunteers Week.

Plans are already in place for a Market Drayton Volunteers Fair later this year, giving residents the chance to discover local organisations, meet existing volunteers and explore ways to get involved.

The fair will showcase the wide variety of volunteering opportunities available across the town and surrounding area.
